"El Norte" is the heartbreaking story of two indigenous Guatemalan teens, Enrique and his sister Rosa, who flee their patria's military regime after their father is murdered and their mother disappears. To escape their bleek future, they chose to embark on the mentally and physically punishing journey towards the United States.
The film delves into the unscrupulous world of trafficking bodies through borders, showing some of the conditions that make millions of South Americans leave everything behind each year for the simple promise of a “new life.”
The film will be followed by a discussion on what it means to be “illegal,” the neoliberal policies that force migrants into becoming economic refugees, and the recent authorization of the building of a 700 mile wall between US and Mexico.

President Bush recently signed the Secure Fence Act 2006, allocating $1.2 billion to the building of a 700 mile double-layer border wall between the United States and Mexico. Israel too has been in the process of building a 400 mile, 25 foot high wall inside occupied Palestinian territories since June 2002.
These walls are nothing but an illicit tactic to divide groups along ethnic lines, criminalizing and isolating a sector of “unwanted” migrants. Join us in protesting these inhumane borders!
The event is being organized by The Ad Hoc Coalition for Justice in the Middle East and DRUM and is being endorsed by ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), NYU-Students for Justice in Palestine, and the Muslim Federation.
